Refugee Week was founded in 1998 in the UK and held every year around World Refugee Day on the 20 June, Refugee Week 2024 will be on 17th-23rd June 2024 and at the University of Greenwich will be celebrating it on the 1st-8th March.

Refugee Week’s vision is for refugees and asylum seekers to be able to live safely within inclusive and resilient communities, where they can continue to make a valuable contribution.

The University of Greenwich Sanctuary Scholarship supports asylum seekers and refugees in pursuing higher education, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity.

To me, a home is...

The theme for Refugee Week 2024 is “Our Home”. We invite you to celebrate what Home means to you.

Home can be a place of refuge, a feeling or a state of mind. It can be found in smells, tastes and sounds. From the clothes we wear to the words we grew up with. It’s in food, music and arts. It’s in our cultures and in our landscapes.

Home can be more than one place and finding it can be a journey, as it is for so many of us who have to leave our countries and rebuild our lives. Sometimes we can find home in a single person. Other times it’s in a whole community. And often, it’s in a single gesture of care and welcome.

Ways that you can connect and feel at home at the University are through:
  • The University of Greenwich's Student Peer Mentoring Scheme is designed to help you adjust to university life.
  • The GSU has lots of student groups across all three campuses, from Sports clubs to Societies, along with Cultural Societies which you can find here.
  • Buddy Benches are across all campuses and we invite you to come say hello and experience the benefits of having a chat for mental health
  • The University of Greenwich will be holding a series of event during Refugee Week. Have a look at the Programme for Refugee Week 2024 at UoG
  • Report and Support Awareness Training. Friday 8th March 2024 at 11am

What do you pledge to do to make our University more like home? Simple acts like having a chat, talk to someone that you haven't talk to before, walking together, or sending a message of welcome can help everyone feel like they belong.
