Report + Support will be holding a Coffee and Chat to promote the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Thursday 15th May at the Lower Deck from 11am to 2pm.
Students and staff are invited to show solidarity and support to the LGBTQ+ community on this day that raises awareness of discrimination and repression in the community worldwide. Information for LGBTQ+ services will be available along with information on our Wellbeing Service. This will be an amazing opportunity to connect, support and network with a variety of people who are all attending to stand again phobia towards the LGBTQ+ community.
Created in 2004, IDAHOBiT aims to draw attention to the violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer (LGBTQIA+) people to drive positive change and is now celebrated in more than 130 countries around the world. The date of 17th May was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
‘IDAHOBIT is an important day as it brings attention to the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, both globally and within our communities. As a Student Union Officer, I see this day as an opportunity to remind us all of the need for acceptance, respect, and equality for all identities. In a student setting, where many are exploring their identities, it’s crucial that we build an environment where everyone feels safe and supported. This day also encourages us to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community and work toward creating a world where everyone can live freely and authentically.’ - Amrutha Srivarshini Gullapalli
